There are some other entries for the Port Phillip District in Sydney. These were registered by clergymen who visited the district such as the Rev. Edward Gifford Pryce of Maneroo/Monaro who toured Gippsland in 1845 and 1847. Possible others include the Rev. John Davies Mereweather of the Edward River District and Fr. Charles Lovat of Yass who also crossed the Murray River at times.

The New South Wales Pioneers Index shows a reference number such as V1843 3321 27A for these entries. This means that the event occurred in 1843 and is located as entry number 3321 at the start of Volume 27. Once you have this reference number you can then consult the microfilms produced by the Archives Authority of New South Wales to view a handwritten copy of the church register which may even contain the original signatures of your ancestors. This can all be done for free in the Genealogy area of the State Library of Victoria.

Even if you have already obtained a copy of a record from the Victorian Registrar it is worthwhile to check for a NSW record to see if it contains additional information.

The Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages is currently considering the public release of their holdings of Victoria's Early Church Records on CD-ROM. One disk of the two disc set would have digitised images of the actual registers and the other disc would contain the indexes.

In the December 2000 edition of "Ancestor", the President of the Genealogical Society of Victoria, David Weatherill, gave details of the project. He said that the Government Registry is seeking feedback to know if there is enough interest to justify the public release of these records.

The Port Phillip Pioneers Group has advised the Registrar of their support for this project and the hope that these records will be as complete and accurate as possible, and that the software will be user friendly.

Members can volunteer to assist with Registry indexing projects by contacting roster co-ordinator Peter Prideaux at the Registry on 9830 5019 or enquire through the Genealogical Society of Victoria or the Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies.

Some parish registers are already available. These are listed in "Parish Registers in Australia" by Nick Vine Hall.
