THOMAS FOSTER CHUCK - PHOTOGRAPHER

In 1870 this enterprising photographer began collecting photographs of Victoria's early settlers. His plan was to produce a single large picture containing the portraits of old colonists who settled here between the years 1835 and 1842. He planned to present the finished product to the trustees of the Public Library as 'a memorial for transmission to posterity' with copies also available for sale to private individuals. He was at the time living at Dalgety Street, St. Kilda and had a Photographic Studio in the Royal Arcade, Melbourne. By September of 1870 he had collected 200 portraits and was hoping to have the work completed by December of that year. In September of 1872 it was reported that he then had 670 portraits and the work was approaching completion. On 7 December 1872 the Melbourne "Argus" newspaper reported the completion of the project. Its dimensions were 6 feet by 5 feet 9 inches and it contained the photographs of 713 old colonists. In addition, the annual accounts of the Old Colonists' Association for the year ending 30 June 1874 showed that they had paid Chuck the sum of 10 guineas for preparing a list of old colonists.

Thomas Chuck was born on 19 September 1826 at London, England, the son of John Chuck, upholsterer and appraiser, and his Scottish wife Mary, nee Campbell. Some sources give his father's name as Thomas Chuck which is the name that incorrectly appears on the photographer's death certificate. His parents lived in Shoe Lane, London and his father had a warehouse in Gunpowder Alley, Bishopsgate Street, London. It was 5 October 1834 before Thomas was taken to St. Bride's Church, Fleet Street to be baptised. The parish register gives his name as Thomas Chuck and it was not until the 1860's that he adopted 'Foster' as a middle name. A clue as to why he chose that name might be in the marriage entry for his parents. They were married on 7 February 1811 at Christ Church, Newgate Street, London. This parish had been united with St. Leonard's, Foster Lane, London in 1670 and both of Thomas's parents gave their place of residence as 'St. Leonard's, Foster' in the parish register.

Thomas Chuck arrived at Melbourne on 24 November 1852 per "Arundel" from London, England. On 15 July 1854, at St. Paul's Church of England, Melbourne he married the newly arrived Adeline Holt, daughter of Henry Holt, tutor, and his wife Elizabeth, nee Palmer. Chuck set himself up in business as a cabinet maker with premises at 159 Bourke Street East in Melbourne, adding additional premises at 61 Bourke Street East by 1856. However by 1860 he had become insolvent. This may have been partly due to him giving assistance to his sister Mary during the illness and death of her husband, John Sorrell who had run a Hay and Corn Store at 191 King Street, Melbourne.

On 4 March 1856 a son was born to Thomas and Adeline at their residence in St. Kilda. They named him Thomas Henry Chuck, and he was their only surviving child. Another five children were lost in infancy, at least two of whom were stillbirths. In fact Adeline died at Daylesford on 14 March 1867 a day after giving birth to a stillborn son.

In the early 1860's Thomas became involved with promoting a 'diorama' depicting scenes of events of the Burke and Wills expedition. This included tours to Sydney and Hobart. One of his partners in this venture was a brother of the theatrical entrepreneur, George Coppin. This appears to have been what developed his flair for showmanship and photography, for it was not long after his involvement with this that he opened a photographic studio in the Royal Arcade, Melbourne. A year or two later he moved to Daylesford where one of his assignments was to photograph crime scenes connected with the trial of David Young for the murder of Margaret Graham. He also travelled around the Western District taking photos but by 1868 he had moved back to Melbourne.

On 20 July 1869, at All Saints Church of England, Northcote, he married Mary Ambrose, widow of Hugh McQueen, and daughter of James Ambrose and his wife Rebecca, nee Munn of Milton, Kent, England. There were no children from this marriage. Before long Chuck was back working from premises in the Royal Arcade in Melbourne. It was at this time he began work on his famous work, 'The Explorers & Early Colonists of Victoria' photo mosaic. He was always ready to supply copies of his photographs to newspapers for comment and to enter them in exhibitions. His photos won him a Gold Medal at the 1874 London International Exhibition. He also experimented in such things as colouring his photos with oils and water colours.

In 1876 he sold his studio in the Royal Arcade to Nicholas Caire and in October of that year he and his second wife, Mary, sailed on the "Miltiades" for England. They returned to Melbourne on the "Moravian" in May 1878 but Chuck does not appear to have done much work as a photographer after his return, though he possibly assisted in his son's ventures. When he died on 7 December 1898 at Kerferd Road, Albert Park he was described as being an evangelist, acting as Agent for the Evangelisation Society of Australasia. His widow died on 7 October 1915 at Jolimont Street, Jolimont. Both were buried at the St. Kilda Cemetery.

Chuck's only son, Thomas Henry Chuck, was married on 22 January 1879 at the Congregational Church, St. Kilda, to Alice Jane Haddock, daughter of Thomas Haddock and Ellen, nee Hunt. Their children were Thomas Northcote Chuck (1881-1953); Henry Gordon Chuck (1885-1917); Adeline Frances Chuck (1880-1947); Myee Chuck; and Alice Lillian Etta Mary Chuck (1889-1973). He was a photographer like his father, having studios in Bendigo, Ballarat and later at Ascot Vale from the 1880s until about 1910. His wife also appears to have briefly tried her hand at photography about 1900. He died on 22 February 1920 at Melbourne and his wife died in June 1939 at Jolimont.

The original of Thomas Foster Chuck's photo mosaic is now held by the State Library of Victoria. A copy of the photos with an index is also held in book form and the individual photos are viewable in the Picture Collection on the State Library of Victoria's website.
